Old and New - The Neues Museum

The Neues Museum is one of my favorite spots in Berlin. Because, there you can feel the authentic character of the city: “old and new, altogether”. The building passes this feeling on to the visitors.

The museum is situated on Museum Island. It was built according to the plans by Friedrich August Stüler as an example of the neoclassical architecture of museums in the 19th century. The building suffered from the bombing of Berlin during the Second World War which left it in a very bad condition. Therefore the museum was closed shortly after.

Interior

The original structure should be emphasized in its spatial context and original materiality - the new reflects the lost without imitating it.

In 1997, David Chipperfield Architects won the international competition for the rebuilding of the museum in collaboration with Julian Harrap. The office describes its work in such a way: “The restoration and repair of the existing are driven by the idea that the original structure should be emphasized in its spatial context and original materiality - the new reflects the lost without imitating it. The new exhibition rooms are built of large-format prefabricated concrete elements consisting of white cement mixed with Saxonian marble chips. Formed from the same concrete elements, the new main staircase repeats the original without replicating it.”
